About

Hi there and thanks for reading.

I know many writers create blogs to talk about the writing process, publishing, news about upcoming writing-related events, and to engender conversations about writing. These bloggers do a good job so I don’t think you need one more.  Instead, I hope to use my blog, “The Early Draft,” to experiment with some possible essay ideas. It’s a place to get over my self-consciousness at showing work that is not in its final form and to bask in the feedback and encouragement that my lovely readers provide. I hope you’ll enjoy reading some of this early draft writing. You never know, you may find a version of it published in a journal, magazine, or book. Stranger things have happened…

Thank you for coming to my blog!

  1. Hi,

I read the piece about luggage and your father. It was really beautiful. I lost my father four years ago and then some… I was at a writer’s residency on Flores Island in the Azores with Erika Sanders and the email I just sent to her was bounced back. My name is Amanda Deutch and I found your blog by googling Erika and Whidbey,. I’d really like to get in touch with her. Can you please relay that to her for me? Thank you.

    Truly,
    Amanda

  2. I really enjoyed your piece on what a butch carries in her purse. I am in my own process of becoming whatever it is I will discover on the other end (at the ripe age of 46) and I still carry a purse. I don’t think I’ll ever give it up – it’s just too darned handy!

But the best thing in your purse? The pen from Solstice. You see, as part of my becoming I just finished my first residency at Solstice (in poetry). I love it there and I hope I get to be the proud owner of a green Solstice pen (to match my green Solstice bag, which has become a constant companion to my purse).

I’m looking forward to reading more of your blog. Maybe some day we can meet during residency…I’m going to be there for a while.

    • Hi again. Is your first name Von?

It would be great to meet at a Solstice residency. I will look forward to seeing you in January. Solstice is a special place, I agree. I, too, carry that green Solstice bag along with my purse, LOL. I know you’ll get your pen. I’m sure you’re a terrific writer. And we all become what we are meant to become in the time that it takes. I look forward to saying hi in person. We are FB friends now. Stay in touch!

      Take care,
      Cindy
